Shari Johannes, the director of Dog Pack Rescue in Kingston, GA, passed away on Friday, February 19th. This is a tremendous loss to the rescue world.

Since 2004, Shari's efforts helped to rescue 5,000 dogs from high kill animal control facilities in northwest Georgia. At her dog sanctuary, the dogs were kept in packs and rehabilitated through any problem behaviors. Then the dogs were evaluated and matched with appropriate homes. She was always the first to step up when other rescues in the area struggled with overflow.

The rescue's website best describes the facility: "Everything we do is in the best interest of the dogs. There are no cages. The dogs have big fields of grass and trees in which to run. We believe that dogs, as living creatures, are entitled to a quality life with respect and compassion."

After Katrina hit in 2005, Shari and her partner Tony bought an old school bus, gutted it, and worked with others to raise funds for gas. Then they drove down to Louisiana and brought back many dogs for medical care and rehabilitation.

In 2008, Dog Pack Rescue started a program called "Spay Your Momma." In an effort targeted at owners who repeatedly turned in unwanted pups to animal control, the rescue offered to take pups into their program if the owners allowed them to spay the canine mother.

The Cesar's Way team came to know Shari when she helped in the promotion of Cesar's Atlanta seminar last October. We are deeply sorry for the loss, and our sympathy goes out to her friends and family. We hope they can draw comfort in the knowledge that her work for dogs in need will continue to live on.
